Our brand gets its name from Nemesis, the goddess of retribution worshipped in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.
To the ancient Greeks, Nemesis represented the belief that actions have consequences and that no one stands above them. Her name carried the idea of dealing out what is due.
She was the force of retribution against wrongdoing, undeserved excess, and especially hubris, the kind of arrogance that led someone to believe they could act without consequence.
Nemesis was not simply revenge. She represented the reckoning that followed when those boundaries were crossed and the restoration of what had been thrown out of balance.

The Romans adopted Nemesis into their own religious world and continued to worship her. Roman interpretations connected her with fate, rivalry, envy, and the resentment provoked by excessive fortune or arrogance.
Through those interpretations, the central idea remained: actions carry consequences, and what is due eventually comes.
Over centuries, the meaning of Nemesis continued to evolve.
Today, the word nemesis is commonly used to mean an enemy, rival, or opponent that is extremely difficult to defeat. But that modern definition carries only part of what Nemesis originally represented.
